Performance of canola-based straight vegetable oil (SVO) was compared to diesel using a New Holland T7060 tractor with an Elsbett fuel conversion system. Comparisons were made using a stationary tractor PTO dynamometer and by performing field operations. The dynamometer tests revealed that the power output of the T7060 was significantly higher (5%) for canola SVO when compared to diesel due to the Elsbett system, which increased the common rail fuel pressure. This increase resulted in significantly higher (4.07%) SVO fuel consumption for power production levels above 115 kW compared to diesel fuel. In the field, however, it was found that SVO fuel consumption was not significantly different from diesel for the two operations tested: planting soybeans and mowing alfalfa.
