Structured variability as a signature of biological processes

Abstract

The paper suggests that the apparent redundancy typical of animal (including human) actions is a useful and highly valuable feature, better called abundance. It offers a physics-based definition of living systems and reviews specific features of movements by biological systems with the focus on understanding action stability. Further, the idea of structured variability is introduced as a sign of controlled action stability within the framework of the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis. This approach can be generalized to stability of perception and stability of the GIST of a transferred message.
