Symmetry matching of hybrid modes for dielectric metamaterials

Abstract

Recently, a potential new class of metamaterials based on periodic dielectric resonator (DR) arrays was demonstrated, in which a negative index of refraction could be obtained at frequencies near specific resonance modes. It was proposed that electromagnetic coupling between the resonators played a key role in microwave propagation through these structures. In this study, we address these interactions in clusters of DRs. We consider the relationship between the resonant modes, field distribution symmetry, and the symmetry of the DRs configuration in a cluster. It is demonstrated that symmetry matching provides the best approach to couple resonators and direct propagation of microwaves through a cluster. These concepts were experimentally investigated through measurements of the angular dependence of transmission through each of the DR clusters at frequencies close to resonance.
