Abstract

(Hg0.8Re0.2)Ba2CaCu2O 6+δ ((Hg,Re)1212) thick films were fabricated by a two-step method of dip coating and rolling Re0.2Ba2Ca2Cu3O 7+δ precursor onto Ag. The precursor tapes are then reacted in Hg vapor to form the superconducting phase using CaHgO2 as the Hg source. High phase purity (Hg,Re)1212 thick film with colonies of aligned dense grains has been achieved, characterized by an onset superconducting transition temperature of 118 K and the critical current of 1.6 A at 4.2 K in a self-field. The relationship between Ic and film thickness was explored. Investigations of the microstructure of (Hg,Re)1212 close to the silver interface and the magnetization hysteresis loop widths indicate that the major contribution to Ic originates from the thin layer close to the interface. Inhomogeneous film thickness makes Jc difficult to determine accurately, however, the average value is ≈3 × 103 A/cm2 and the maximum local Jc is at least 2 × 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K, self-field.
