A toolkit to analyze team performance in a complex task environment

Abstract

A team-in-the-loop (TITL) simulation system is proposed to equip researchers with tools to quantify concepts such as teammate backup and error correction. The system consists of an object-oriented TITL simulation called the Team Aegis Simulation Platform (TASP), a scenario generation tool, and a database management system that serves as a repository for all system and human data. We will focus our discussion on the conceptual development of a TITL simulation system. We propose that human experimentation using a TITL simulation must use flexible scenarios that constrain the courses of action within the team as well as accommodate dynamic interaction among the team members. Moreover, we submit that performance measurement in the TITL simulation must dynamically adjust to task demands and context-based temporal constraints. A study using earlier versions of TASP will be discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of our system.
