Abstract

A method for transcutaneous, bidirectional information transfer, or telemetry, is being developed for use with the Penn State electric motor-driven total artificial heart and ventricular assist device. The telemetry system works concurrently with the transcutaneous energy transmission system (TETS), using the TETS power transmission frequency as a carrier and the existing TETS coil as the transmitting and receiving coils. Synchronization is achieved by using the TETs on-off cycling as the clock signal for bit transfers in both directions. In the present prototype system the maximum cycling rate (and therefore the baud rate) is 340 Hz. The actual data rate will vary with the load current.
