Rheological properties of asphalt binder are among the most important factors that contribute to cracking in asphalt pavements. Several laboratory tests are promoted to capture fracture tolerance of asphalt concrete. Among these, the semi-circular bend (SCB) test has been gaining popularity due to its ease of use. A laboratory experimental study was undertaken to find how the binder rheological properties correlate with the mix fracture properties when tested under SCB. A number of asphalt mixes were exposed to SCB test. In parallel, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) tests were conducted on the corresponding binders. Asphalt mixes used in the study included virgin mixes with different binder grades, as well as mixes that included different types and contents of recycled materials and recycling agents. SCB test results were analyzed to deliver a modified version of Illinois flexibility index (I-fit) and peak load; while binders were characterized through shear modulus at intermediate temperature, high temperature performance grade, and Glover-Rowe (G-R) parameter. Results show that binder shear modulus correlate reasonably well with the mix strength and flexibility index, and there are discrepancies between G-R parameter and flexibility index.
