Abstract

In this study, akermanite powder (Ca2MgSi2O7) was synthesized using ball-milling with subsequent annealing at high temperatures. The influence of mechanical activation as well as annealing temperature was investigated on the progress of akermanite formation. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to evaluate the ball-milled and heat-treated powders. The formation mechanism of akermanite was scrutinized. It was found that akermanite could not be synthesized directly and the formation of some intermediate compounds such as enstatite is unavoidable. Akermanite was synthesized after 20 h mechanical activation with subsequent annealing at 900 °C for 1 h. The nanostructured akermanite powder had a crystallite size of 34 nm based on the calculations performed by the Williamson–Hall approach.
