Abstract

The STAR Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter (BEMC) was described. This detector, which is among the first significant upgrades to the STAR baseline detector system is being produced and installed in stages with the first ∼25% of the detector installed and ready to operate for the 2001 run. With an acceptance equal to that of the TPC for full length tracks, the BEMC allows STAR to trigger on and study rare, high PT processes. It provide large acceptance for photons and electrons in systems spanning polarized PP through AuAu collisions.
