Abstract

LAVA-GAP-3 and LAVA-GAP-4 tests have been performed to investigate the performance of the in-vessel core catcher using alumina melt as a corium stimulant. The hemispherical in-vessel core catcher made of carbon steel or stainless steel was installed inside the lower head vessel. In this study, the effect of the gap size between the core catcher and the lower head vessel were examined. The gap size was 10mm in the LAVA-GAP-3 test and it was 5mm in the LAVA-GAP-4 test. The in-vessel core catcher was intact without any mechanical damage and metallurgical change in the LAVA-GAP-3 test. The in-vessel core catcher, however, was penetrated due to the limited heat removal capacity through the gap in the LAVA-GAP-4 test.
