Abstract

A three-phase miscibility gap including the austenite and two carbonitrides was presented to describe the thermodynamic stability of three-phase equilibrium. Lower Gibbs energy was found in the three-phase equilibrium than the conventional two-phase equilibrium of austenite and one carbonitride. The Gibbs energies of individual phases were expressed as a function of composition and temperature. The equilibrium between austenite matrix and the carbonitride precipitates was represented by a miscibility gap.
