Thin film quartenary ammonium and phosphonium based anion exchange membranes

Abstract

The studies performed to date highlight the promise of anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology for low temperature fuel cell applications while simultaneously confirming the inherently lower conductivity and poor mechanical properties of AEM films in comparison to their PEM counterparts. Through detailed experimental studies (in part using BDS) across several length and time scales, microstructure property relationships in model AEM films with different conducting functionalities and a common polysulfone backbone will be elucidated. In particular, the effect of cation type and density on AEM conductivity and stability in alkaline environments will be presented.
