One of the fundamental aspects of design and manufacture is the transformation of product functional requirements into tolerances or dimensional bounds on the individual components which make up the product. Tolerance problems in design and manufacturing often require the solution to linear or nonlinear combinations of stochastic variables. This paper describes progress towards the development of integrated computer modules for the solution of statistical tolerancing problems. A software package for the automatic generation of Monte Carlo simulation for combinations of stochastic variables has been designed and implemented. The structure and capabilities of this package are described. Its usefulness in the analysis of tolerances is illustrated by a position tolerance application.
