Abstract

There have been numerous attempts over the past 25 years to construct and test a totally implantable artificial heart (the term totally implantable refers to a portable device implanted within the body with no tubes, wires, cannulas, etc. penetrating the skin). Although there are no truly generic totally implantable artificial hearts, a description of the design criteria and specifications for a general device is presented. The Penn State electric motor-driven heart serves as an example of a state-of-the-art system.
