Towards the generalized super-cholesteric material: I. Construction and axial wave propagation

Abstract

A model for the generalized super-cholesteric material is presented. To fabricate this rotationally inhomogeneous, general uniaxial bianisotropic material we use electrically small, biisotropic spheroidal inclusions. Similarly oriented inclusions are randomly dispersed in a host medium. The resulting composite is effectively a general uniaxial bianisotropic medium whose optical director is fixed in space. Sheets of this composite are stacked on top of each other with the optical director varying helicoidally. Thus the typical structure of a cholesteric liquid crystal emerges. We also study the problem of electro-magnetic wave propagation along the helicoidal axis of the generalized super-cholesteric material. Closed-form solutions are derived.
