TRANS CARE WITHIN AND AGAINST THE MEDICAL-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter is a reprinted excerpt from Trans Care (2020) by Hil Malatino, published by University of Minnesota Press. It discusses antagonistic parts of the relationship between trans care and the medical industrial complex. It highlights trans resistance to pathologization and requirements for treatment that expose trans patients to harm. It also focuses on the risks of such resistance, specifically as it relates to withdrawals and denials of care. It critically examines how trans people have responded to the cultural and financial barrier around trans related medical care, the social and political climate that necessitate these responses, and the reproduction of existing politics in these responses.
