Transported PDF modeling for a direct-injection PCCI engine

Abstract

Transported probability density function (PDF) methods have shown promise in applications to canonical flames and simple internal-combustion-engine configurations. The IC engine application is particularly challenging. The combustion event is highly non-stationary, fuel is injected as a liquid, and experimental diagnostics for validation are difficult. In this work, skeletal-level chemistry (∼40 species), a transported composition PDF method, and a liquid fuel spray model are integrated to compute autoignition and emissions for a real engine. Sensitivity to engine and model parameters are explored, results with versus without consideration of turbulence/chemistry interaction (TCI) are compared, and simulation results are compared with experimental measurements. For this engine and operating conditions, TCI are important, and results that include TCI show better agreement with experimental data.
