Two-port representation of propagation and scattering in radar

Abstract

This paper details the derivation and application of modeling radar propagation and scattering using two-port networks. This form of representation allows different sections of propagation, such as through air or soil, to be computed separately for a particular frequency and then applied to waveforms. A forward-looking radar was modeled first which accounted for air and rain propagation. It was found that the correlation results of both noise and chirp waveforms were similar for different target impedances as well as being dependent upon the target reflection coefficient's phase. A down-looking radar formulation was also derived to represent soil clutter response with varying moisture content. In this case, noise waveforms showed consistently lower correlations than the chirp indicating that noise signals may be a better alternative for clutter suppression.
