The sensitivity enhancement of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was studied by replacing conventional electrode with porous gold (Au) electrodes. The QCM is a thin AT-cut quartz disk that oscillates in the shear mode when a voltage is applied across the electrodes. The total thickness of the porous gold electrodes was estimated to be 1.6 μm from the frequency decrease of 226 kHz upon sputtering silver (Ag)-Au. The sensitivity of the QCM was enhanced by a factor of 40 and by increasing the thickness of the electrodes, it is possible to increase the sensitivity by another factor of 2 or 3.
