The locomotive wheel tire section was examined using EMAT system to determine its ability to be used in in-situ system for unclean roads. A signal with a frequency of 1.01 MHz and an amplitude of 1.2 V was used as an input to the EMAT system. The intensity of reflection was studied as a function of liftoff distance. A signal processing technique was used to determine amplitude of both reflection from crack and the direct signal from the driving EMAT. Analysis suggested that EMAT could be efficiently used to examine railroad vehicles for surface inspections and bulk volume inspections.
