Abstract

In September 2005, Innovative Pavement Research Foundation (IPRF) contracted with Quality Engineering Solutions Inc. (QES) to conduct research on improving Overlay Design Parameters for Concrete Airfield Pavements at the FAA National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) in Atlantic City, NJ. The project scope encompasses the construction and loading of instrumented unbonded concrete overlay test sections at the NAPTF in order to learn more about the design prediction and performance of unbonded concrete overlays for airfield pavements. This research project incorporates design, construction, instrumentation, testing and research into one process. Subsequent research will use the data collected as the basis for analysis of the pavement performance. Construction of the test sections is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2006 and loading will begin shortly thereafter. As work on the project is ongoing, this paper discusses the anticipated construction and instrumentation of the test sections, as well as the approach for data collection and analysis.
